BEIJING — China, under pressure to relax controls over rare earths, said Wednesday it would appeal against a World Trade Organisation ruling that it illegally restricted exports of other key raw materials.

On July 21, Bloomberg reported rare earth exports was 5,625 metric tons in June, according to data from the customs agency. Exports between January and June was 29,367 tons.

One should take note that China just holds about 30 percent of the world's rare earth reserves but produces more than 95 percent of the world's rare earths. Mining and extraction companies could move to other countries in search of rare earth, but that is easier said than done. Environmentalists would oppose them operating on their home turf since they would fear a localized environmental catastrophe. In their minds, only China should suffer the ecological consequences. This sets yet another example of 'not-in-my-backyard-environmentalism.'
